Like the moon controlling the tides, Waterbenders move water using their qi to mimic gravitational pull by choosing how to direct their energy utilizing two jings, which in turn work to push and pull the water being controlled. Because of this lunar sympathy, a Waterbender's power is stronger at night, at its absolute "zenith" during a full moon, and lost during a lunar eclipse. A Waterbender's power is also enhanced during the rain. This is most likely due to the fact that rainwater is nothing more than moisture from the ocean that has condense into the clouds and precipitates back to the earth. Furthermore, Waterbenders' powers are strongest when they are situated in colder climates, during the winter, or near their native polar homelands.

A solar eclipse, often referred to in the series as the "darkest day in fire nation history" namely because firebenders lose their ability to bend flames when a solar eclipse is taking place, indicating their dependance on the sun for fire bending. This is similar to the waterbenders' lack of bending ability during a lunar eclipse. FIRE and WATER are often seen as opposite elements, never co existing in harmony, and in the same way, their weaknesses are of the opposite phenomena: SOLAR and LUNAR eclipses. However, firebenders' skills and abilities in the feild of firebending improve unimaginably when a comet passes the earth. They aquire extremely powerful abilities, such as the ability to fly using fire, and slamming the ground, producing massive pillars of fire.

It was through the utilisation of the Sozin's comet that fire lord Sozin invaded the temples of the nomadic air benders and finished off their race, seeking to destroy the AVATAR, the only threat to his vision to wipe out all other races, for he knew that the avatar immediately succeeding AVATAR ROKU [988 (182YA - 112YA)] was going to be an air nomad of the southern air temple... He failed to do so, resulting in AVATAR AANG becoming the last and only airbender left alive, and is often considered a living artifact together with his one-of-a-kind APPA the flying bison which bends air between its head and tail to fly

Fire lord Sozin, the one who instigated the great war, and also the imperialist who wiped out most of the air nomads

Avatar Roku, the avatar b4 Aang, riding on his pet dragon, Fang...
Roku>Fang
Aang>Appa
You might have noticed the recurring symbols on roku's cloak and sozin's head pin. That's the fire nation emblem as both of them were native fire benders...
